Meek Mill might be from the streets, but his friendships spread to people from all walks of life. The Wins & Losses rapper struck up a close bond with 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin years ago and now Rubin is currently working to get Meek out of jail.

According to Billboard, the two first met at an NBA game a few years back, where the Philadelphia MC bonded with Rubin and his children in their adjacent seats. Since then, the NBA owner took an interest in Meek and his drive to get into the business world, with the two sparking up an unexpected friendship. Now that Meek is serving a sentence of two-to-four years for a probation violation, Rubin has been frequently visiting the rapper behind bars and is determined to help get him out in time for Christmas.

“His spirits are about as good as they could be in jail,” Rubin tells the outlet. “He’s smiling, he’s positive and he’s really very appreciative of all the support he’s gotten… from Al Sharpton, Colin Kaepernick, Kevin Hart, all these people supporting him on social media.”

Michael was also reportedly in the courtroom when Meek appeared in front of Judge Genece Brinkley, who has been under fire for the way she has handled the rapper’s case.

“I thought I was watching a movie,” Rubin continues. “The whole thing was surreal. You’re talking about a guy who’s built a multi-billion dollar business multiple times… I come from a world of honesty and integrity and I witnessed what I consider to be as bad an abuse of power as I’ve ever seen. And at that point, I said to Meek that myself and others will do everything we can to support him… Hopefully, he’ll be home for Christmas.”

Rubin says that he is “confident” that the MMG signee will be home for Christmas, which is just a few days away, despite having been denied bail. He assures that he is using every possible resource he has to try and fight for his friend’s freedom.
