Football legend, Diego Maradona has accused his fellow compatriot Lionel Messi of not being a natural leader for Argentina and has urged his country to stop treating the Barcelona icon as a ‘God’.
Maradona made the statement while speaking about Messi’s performance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia,
‘Messi’s a great player, but he’s not a leader,’ the football legend told Mexican television:
‘Before talking to the coach and players, he’ll play on the PlayStation. Then, on the pitch, he wants to be the leader. He’s the best along with Cristiano Ronaldo but for me, it’s pointless to make a leader out of a man who goes to the bathroom 20 times before a match.’
Maradona, who managed Messi and Argentina between 2008 and 2010, said: ‘There’s no two ways around it. Let’s stop making a God out of Messi. Messi is just another player for Argentina. I wouldn’t call him up right now. We need to take pressure off him and the leadership away from him for him to be the Messi we want him to be.’
‘I would make him play as I want, how I know Messi can play.’
Scaloni added: ‘I hope Messi is in the future for us because he is the best player in the world. If he is not, we should try and play as a team and be difficult to beat.’
